Lina loves hanging in the hammock. It’s the time she feels most free from chronic pain and her pain levels can go from a 11/10 (extremely high) to a 4, which is still considered high but because Lina has a high threshold pain level it’s a huge improvement for her.
My favourite pose (says Lina) is “hanging upside like a bat, the feeling is freeing but also empowering as its something I never thought I could do. Coming to Vibes and working with Margie is about challenging my body but also my mindset”.
Lina’s goal is to be able to hang upside down like a bat without anyone holding on to her legs, like in the picture showing on the right.
Lina has always been independent and never saw herself as ‘disabled’ until a few years ago when she fell over.
The fall she describes as a circumstance that literally threw her off her feet. She couldn’t walk or move because of the injury. Bed rest was required, as the pain was difficult to manage. By the time she was able to get up again, muscles had wasted so much in her hips and legs, which isn’t good for her condition in short called AMC. Arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC). For Lina, it means that she has stiffness in the joints and muscles and more in one place. The condition affects her legs the most even though her hands are visually different but there is no “disability” for her there, as she explains as she can do so much.
Lina explained the fall was like “having a disability was always just a part of being me. After the fall, I actually felt disabled as my life changed dramatically. The fall was a blessing in disguise in a way. It forced me to be real, as it forced me to face my feelings and thoughts and my disability as I looked at it in a whole new way. I had to sit in the gunk long enough to understand it, accept the parts of me I didn’t like, and face the darkness and get the help I needed”.
Lina needed to feel free again and in control so started coming to Vibes Fitness Fitzroy and together we helped her look at the possibilities.
Winter is the hardest season for her so getting her back at Vibes to work out and hang in the hammock will help relieve the chronic pain as well as give her the sense of freedom she would love to have.
